My late parents chose the Kanji characters “水砂子,” meaning child of the shore, for my name. It was their gracious choice, meant to bless me with abundance from the seas.

Knowing that I am now older than they ever were, I sometimes feel lost. I was a typical teenager and didn’t know how to express how much I loved them. I go to the beach at dawn and allow myself to feel confused, lost, and uneasy until the sun brings its comforting warmth. Then, the lapping water reminds me of their legacy, which I have carried on and will continue to do so.

I am humbled by their choice of my name and grateful for their love. Their love still guides me.
